The picture of “childlike faith” is incredible. To envision a little girl running with her arms wide open and leaping into her Daddy’s arms with no concern for falling or rejection or shame is absolutely beautiful. But there’s another kind of faith that has shaken me, challenged me, and humbled me to the core this year - teenage faith.
Teenagers get a bad rap. They’re often considered inconsiderate, impulsive, selfish, naive, disrespectful, etc. But what happens when a teenager meets God? What happens when they choose Him and He chooses them? I’ve seen it this year. It’s incredible.
Compassion: I’m continuously humbled by 15 and 16 year old girls who show real empathy and concern for others. They come alongside their peers in their prayers. They ask where others have been if we haven’t seen them around in a while. They have a heart for those the rest of the world has labeled “unloveable.”
Commitment: I’m humbled when a girl dealing with the pressure of her social life, family expectations, homework, advanced classes, multiple extracurriculars, etc., makes it a priority to focus on God and to grow deeper in her relationship with him. She chooses Him deliberately and without guilt or obligation.
Calling: I’m humbled when a girl nearly a decade younger than me recognizes a gift from God and pursues it with her entire heart.
Courage: I’m humbled with a teenage girl with so much pain steps forward with complete honesty and allows God to rescue and/or redeem her.
Clarity: I’m humbled when an incredibly talented teenage girl realizes that her life is about more than those talents and that those talents exist so she can love God and love people.
So yeah… I want childlike faith. I want it completely. But I also want teenage faith… Faith that produces action. Faith that changes lives.
